Meet The Winemaker - Jim Pfeiffer

Since college, Laura always wanted to own her own business. so we were lucky to find each other.

I accidentally studied wine in college, but it wasn’t some sort of drunken affair.  I actually hated wine, but knowing it was both the social beverage of choice and the hardest one to select in a store, I decided to take Geography of Wines at my college, Miami of Ohio.  The funny thing was, during the first lecture, I think I was the only person who dreaded the second half of the class – trying wine!  After my first glass in class, I realized what my problem was – I never tasted good wine before.  My senses were awakened and my thirst for knowledge in both the tasting and the whole wine growing and making process became unquenchable.  Let me expand upon  that that last statement.  Unquenchable in knowledge, not in an over imbibing way.  .

Laura and I found each other in 1991, got married in 1992, and moved to Bloomington in 1993 where we met Kathleen and Bill Oliver of Oliver Winery. Thanks to our good friends’ urging, Turtle Run Winery was founded in 1997 with the purchase of our farm. Vineyard plantings occurred in 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2002, with more to come as soon as children get older and more time is freed up.

Speaking of children, we have three youngsters wandering the winery daily, so watch out for the occasional spilled milk.

In 2004, we teamed with Oliver Winery, Huber Winery, Winzerwald Winery, French Lick Winery, Butler Winery, and Carousel Winery to form the Indiana Uplands Wine Trail. Flies on the wall have really enjoyed our spirited, lively and always fun trail meetings. We wholeheartedly recommend you jump on the trail and try wines from all of us. Besides, there’s a gift for finishing the trail!

Cheers,

Jim Pfeiffer
